Staging

A staging copy is a private copy of your website to try changes on, such as plugin updates or a new theme, without touching the live site. It’s on the Grow, Scale and Pro plans.

Make a staging copy

  1. Open the website and go to its Staging page.
  2. Click Create staging copy and choose to start from a copy of your live site.
  3. When it says Ready, click its address to open it.
The Staging card before a copy exists, with a Create staging copy button.

It’s behind a login (your browser asks for it), hidden from search engines and at a temporary address. The username and password are on the card.

A ready staging copy: its temporary address, the login, when it was last copied, and the buttons Make staging live, Copy live site to staging, Change password and Delete staging copy.

Try your changes

Work on the staging copy as you would on the live site. Need a fresh start? Copy live site to staging copies the live site over it again.

Make it live

Happy with it? Click Make staging live. The staging copy becomes your live website. For 7 days you can change your mind: Undo: put the old site back restores the old one, and Keep the new site finishes the change.

Orders, comments or form entries made on the live site while you worked on staging aren’t in the staging copy. On a busy shop, make your changes quickly or copy the live site again just before going live.
