Use the website console

The website console is a command line for your website, right in your browser: WP-CLI, Composer, Git and PHP, with nothing to install.

Before you start

The console asks for a code from your authenticator app every time it opens, so turn on two-factor login first (Turn on two-factor login).

Open it

  1. Open the website and click the Website console tile (or Open console on the Files & databases page).
  2. Enter the 6-digit code from your app and click Open console. A recovery code works too.
  3. Type commands into the black window below.

Things to try

  • wp plugin list lists your WordPress plugins; wp plugin update --all updates them.
  • wp search-replace http://old.example https://new.example --dry-run shows what would change before you run it for real.
  • composer install and git pull for your own code.
  • php -v shows the PHP version.

Good to know

  • Commands run on your live website, and there’s no undo. If you’re unsure, take a backup first.
  • Type exit or close the page when you’re done. The console closes after 15 minutes without typing, and anything still running stops when it closes, so use a scheduled task (Scheduled tasks (cron jobs)) for long jobs.
  • The console only reaches your own website’s files.
